PORTSMOUTH ABBEY STUDENT CENTER

 

Overlooking Narragansett Bay, this flexible common space was built to accommodate student presentations, meetings, dances and casual socializing. The custom copper solar screen covers the clearstory windows providing filtered light into the space while reducing heat gain on the facility.

Rough Point Museum Project

Rough Point Museum

Rough Point is an expansive red sandstone and granite structure at the southern end of Newport, Rhode Island’s Cliff Walk. This 1887 Gilded Age Mansion was originally built as a summer “cottage” for Frederick Vanderbilt then later sold to American Tabacco Company founder James Duke in 1922. After James’s death his daughter Doris Duke eventually spent her summers here along with her 2 pet Bactrian camels. Today this museum is run by the Newport Restoration Foundation and includes topiary camels reminiscent of Doris Duke’s beloved pets, Princess and Baby, who summered with her in Newport.
